, 1990

During the turn-around 1989/90, the Freital-based painter and collagist Wolfgang Petrovsky resorted to means which were rather unusual for him. The occasion was the invitation to the "Banner Project" of the Art Society Landau in which artists from East and West participated. The object with the ambiguous title "Boiled-down Time" reveals itself as ideological six-pack. Bottled up during the "historical" fall of 1990 were pieces of GDR and FRG. The six preserving jars stand on the Socialist textbook classic "The Naked Man" by Gottfried Bammes. Its protective cover depicts Leonardo's "Vitruv Man" (Man as measure of all things). And all that rests in a wooden box with the label "Leihverp OGS" (Leihverpackung Obst, Gemüse, Speisekartoffeln = Returnable packaging fruit, vegetables, table potatoes) from the disintegrating cooperative cycles of the GDR. Liberated from old functions, all elements create new inter-connections while also referring to their functional history. With humorous style and a deeper meaning, the artist presents a critical comment on the rushed German unification. Compact as it is, the object seems to be a symbol and presents the viewer with the boiled-down bulk as object for the mind and as one for the eye.
